Post BBQ report

Man, that was a good BBQ. Pissed off the neighbors a bit when it went a little later and louder than it should have, but then..thats not hard around here…

Angela is still passed out, as are my Friends Jenny and Angela’s mom (they all got schnockered and crashed here). Before I went to bed, they were going to attempt to play the Wii in that state. I really need to find out how that went.

I got up, cleaned up the kitchen a bit (no matter what time I go to bed, my body will wake me at 7 am..it just happens) and made the ever powerful and necessary coffee (second cup down, third on the way..) and now its just…silent. Time for making some tunes.

More work, and a party..

I started going through all my old MP3 file demo’s off my old website this week. Its interesting to listen to the last 3 or 4 years work in a few hours. Some of these tracks were lost in ‘the big crash of 2003′..for those, its almost hard to listen. There was some really ace work on that hard drive..

For the rest, it is sometimes hard to decide what to keep and what to dump. having a focal point or theme for my ultimate release would help. Then I could judge the tracks weather or not they reinforce that theme or not. At the same time, I dont want it to turn into a concept album..

I probably wont get any work done this weekend. Its my wife’s birthday/summer BBQ today. tomorrow both the house, and probably my head, will need recovery.

Forbidden planet

So Ive beem making more headway with reaktor. This weekend I created a synth that was very capable of reproducing the entire 1950’s sci-fi sound FX track. Will it be usefull? I dont know yet. I am not getting song spark off of it, yet, but that usually doesnt happen till I get some other bits going too.

The PEK being out of working order is really bugging the crap out of me. Ive got my Korg Z1 on the desk as my controller in its place, but its just not the same. the PEK is my go-to synth for inspiration. I usually just have to twist a few dials and do a very little sequencer programming to get in the zone. the replacement board should be in tomorrow, and hopefully that will straighten things out..

the graphics card in my secondary computer (the one I use for editing the samplers and the Nord G2) is dying. after a little while of being on the screen continuously blanks out and the screen goes black. i’d run it with the case off, but this is an older athlon, so it sounds like a B52 bomber with the case off. Finding a replacement card could be difficult – the system is pretty old (AGP cards were the hot thing when it was current).

On another note, I need to get off my ass and finish some of these programming projects Ive got for a certain client. I am *way* behind on it (guess Ive been playing with reaktor too much on the train…). I pretty much have a full time job now, though I am still *technically* a consultant there so time has been very limited. I dont have the mondays off that I used to have to catch up on this stuff, and weekends have been very neccessary downtime. *sigh*..time management is not my greatest skill. (hence why I keep a blog…).

Dissappointment

Well, I have a track I want to finish, but I cant because my PEK has died on me. I would be really upset if DSI didnt get right on it and send me a replacement board. Ive really got to hand it to them – they take care of their customers. Andrew McGowan (sp?) emailed me back and forth for a week trying to sort out its troubles, and when it came down to a board swap the total cost is only going to be $25 bucks. really phenominal. It sucks I am without it for a weekend, but thats better than being out the 2k the keyboard cost in the first place..

results

well, I was right. My first play at using math I know nothing about to process audio signals resulted in something very similar to a mosquito fart.

Even a failed experiment, however, can yield some good things – particularly ideas on how to improve the experiment. Not to get overly heady, but I think the problem is that I plugged in audio signals to all variables in the equation, resulting in to much intermodulation. The resulting signal pattern becomes almost chaotic, but not quite turns into noise. Perhaps if I plugged in constant values for 3 of the 4 values, and let the last be the only audio source I may be onto something..

Infrastructure

Part of the successful release of any project is the unfortunate drudgery of social networking. Being the fairly anti-social animal that I am, this has always been particularly difficult (guess thats why the record company never really took off…hmm..). So yesterday, I worked on the blog layout a bit, got my http://www.myspace.com/noisetheorem page setup and started adding my friends ( my legitamate friends…I refuse to be a band-spammer ). I also started hashing out a redesign for www.noisetheorem.com . It currently just kinda sucks.

Somewhere in there I also kept working on music. I have some interesting ideas I want to explore with reaktor where in I will plug in audio sources as data sources for certain mathematical equations. It will probably come out more like a mosquito fart than a song, but thats where the ‘experimental’ part of electronic music comes from – the experimentation. Unfortunately, not every experiment is successfull..

Weekend update

Well, this was an eventful weekend. In addition to starting some work on a track, and continuing my exploration of Reaktor, we had a small electrical fire! Yes.. a fire. in my house.

I wont go into the long details, but everyone is safe and sound, and the damage minimal. About the worst caualty (in addition to my witts) was my creative flow has been totally derailed by this. I guess thats to be expected. Maybe I should write a song about it. No, that would not be the absolutely most cliche response I could have..

Anyway, if I can get away from call insurance people and the like, Ill go back to working on that track. it was off to a very good start.

testing…1 2.3

Just testing to see if this thing is on. I am considering getting away from the evils of LJ, at least for my ‘project blog’.

This will be my more ‘professional’ and ‘public’ blog, while the LJ will probably remain as my private space (and hence, locked off to most mortals).

well…here we go..
