one synth to bind them…

So I spent a few minuts working with my Yamaha FS1r.  I recently re-aquired one (by recently I mean nearly a year ago now) and havnt played with it much.  To many other shiny toys distracting me I guess…

Well, I got a good (free) editor for it, and dove in programming.  What an amazing piece of equipment.  Maybe it was just luck, but withinside 10 minutes, I had an excellent drone pad type patch -exactly what I bought it for – haunting my studio and scaring my dog.  Its nice.  But it left me with a question…
I have NI’s FM8.  Ive worked with it and just *never* been able to get sounds like this out of it.  I am only using, like 4 operators, so its not  the 8 v.s. 6 op thing.   And like I said before I am using a software editor so its not a question of software v.s. hardware.  In fact, if you asked me I would tell you the NI software has a better more steamlined interface.  Then what gives?
hmm…

Fun beginnings

Today, an old member of Carbon Haze (my first band) came over in an attempt to make some tunes.

As was usuall for us, we spent more time shooting the shit and looking up Sci-Fi movie trailors than we did making music.    We also got a pizza and talked the usual BS.
When we did finally turn to music, we got something started on the 808, pulled into live and got into a rather experimental place.  Jason ended up just playing around with the guiar and I mostly worked on processing it and the 808.  I have some synthy stuff in mind, but I think I need to hear what jason does with the other bits first.
It was a hell of a lot of fun, and one of the more sustained studio sessions I have had.  I hope to make this a regular thing.  Considering the time its been since last we tried to get anything done, its amazing we got as much as we did.
So..no demo to share yet, but some scratches in the right direction started.  cool things to come I feel.

Just a thought…

Thinking of selling the PEK to finance getting the expanded filters for the Omega 8…

Opinions?

Studio bliss

As some of you know, I am painfully slow in making studio configuration decisions. So slow, that by the time I make a decision technology has usually moved to make it an obsolete or at least less optimal choice….which delays my actions and forces re-evaluation. For me, its almost always hardware failures that trigger the final decision and that is the case this time.

Now that its done, I am very happy with the results. Ive got a computer thats way faster with more storage and a significantly quieter cooling system, an audio interface that gives me 26 analog channels and complete ‘in the box’ mixing, and a sleek workflow that makes it *fun* to be in the studio.

As usual, however, my studio is not complete yet. There are a few key items I would like to add on to it, but they are *very* few:

1. Elektron Machinedrum UW. – Ive got one on loan at the moment, and it defnitely belongs on the shortlist. Ive finally gotten a feel for how to get a good snare drum out of it, and it makes a great companion to the Electribes (they just sit very well together). I could probably forgo the UW part. Glitchy sampling just really is not my thing.

2. Kurzweil K2×00R – I keep thinking a K2600RS would be killer. I miss VAST from when I had a K2000, and the 2600 adds KDFX, Live mode, and just better everything in general. Crappy antiquated hardware? Yes – but full of potential as an FX box.

3. Akai MPC2500/5000 – I admit it: I miss my MPC1000. Selling it was probably a mistake. It was just a great little beat maker, and making a good beat is and always has been the start of great songs for me. At current used prices, I would even consider a 4000, which are starting to drop dramatically despite being more advanced in a number of ways. Do I (does anyone) need a hardware sampler in this day and age? No, but its not about the sampler – its the workflow. Hell, maybe even just a 500 would work out…

But thats about it. I’d have to get a killer deal on any/all of that though. With the impending birth of a child, however, Its probably not going to be. But I am ok with that. Really.
