If you follow me on twitter/facebook/gplus, then you know I have been engaged in a full-on modular binge this last month. A couple factors came together that allowed me to have a budget to work with. Also, leaving STG to pursue my own project full time freed me to clean up the practice space and reclaim it as my own. I don’t need to think about a band in my space anymore – just my own needs.
The first step was to clean up the whole basement area and get it organized. I wont bother you with the details of that, but suffice to say it felt really good. I had a ton of old books, legacy software, computers and just plain junk that was taking up space and really getting in the way (both physically and mentally). If it didn’t have a value, then its gone.
So what did I add to the modular? A lot:
- 4ms Pingable Envelope Generator
- Harvestman Double Andor
- Harvestman Hertz Donut
- Livewire Vulcan Modulator
- Makenoise Optomix
- Intellijel Korgasmatron
- Intellijel HexVCA
- Intelljel uFold
- Pittsburgh Audiomix
- Doepfer A189-1 Bitcrusher
- Doepfer A161 Quad Sequential Switch
- Doepfer DarkTime
- Abstract Data Reactive Shaper
- Malekko Switch
- Malekko Output
- Flame Clockwork
- Circuit Abbey Gozinta
That’s pretty complete and respectable synth, let alone an expansion to an existing one. It has opened doors with the modular that were previously closed, particularly with sequencing, while adding a lot of valuable modulation options and tone shaping tools. The synth in total is now an unrestrained monster…and I still have 14 hp empty (though the 13hp Harvestman Bionic Lester will probably fill it upon release).
Over the next few weeks I am going to be exploring all of the above and, hopefully, posting a lot of new music created by this beast. I also have a new computer coming into the studio, and I am taking the opportunity to reduce the amount of software I have to stare at as much as possible. Ill do a separate post on that in the next day or two as I get it setup.
All of this, and I am forcing myself to take a vacation the first week of February specifically to get to know this synth. I predict much noise will be made. Oh yes. Much noise.
